One healthy habit we picked up in our home is drinking 32 oz of water first thing in the morning. When we first wake up in the morning we feel naturally dehydrated since we haven’t drank any water for at about 8-9 hours. Our bodies are 72% water after all, so re-hydrating first thing in the morning will give you a great start to your day. Here are some of the benefits of drinking water first thing in the morning:
- It fires up your metabolism. Drinking water helps boost your metabolism by up to 30% for up to 90 minutes according to a study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
- Water helps your body flush out toxins. “Your kidneys do an amazing job of cleansing and ridding your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is adequate”, according to Kenneth Ellner, an Atlanta-based dermatologist. Getting fluids into your body right after your wake up will help your body flush out toxins first thing in the morning.
- Your brain tissue is 70-80% water. If you are dehydrated you are putting stress on your body and your brain and you may experience brain fog, or fatigue.
- Water makes your skin healthier. Water can remove toxins from the blood and this can result to better looking and glowing skin. It actually hydrates your skin cells and helps plump them up and reduces the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Get a more balanced lymph system. Drinking water first thing in the morning every day can balance your lymph system. Lymph glands help you to fight infection so it will help you to fight off whatever bugs are going around.
- Get your bowels moving. Having water first thing in the morning helps wake up your digestion and gets your bowels moving.
To get an extra boost from our morning water I make a pitcher full for my husband and myself and add the juice of one lemon, along with 2 tsp of MSM, 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar and dash of cayenne pepper.
